I find this to be a very interesting movie. It's pretty much a recap of the series but it has a lot of new animation and is told more from Haruka's perspective with a few changes from the original story arc. The story is very philosophical and beautiful and should be enjoyed. I did this encode anamorphically to preserve as much detail as possible. The actual frame size of 688x464 is the same as that on the DVD after the sizable crop that was required. Your player should resize to 688x516 in order to have the intended aspect ratio of 4:3. TCMP, Zoomplayer, and the XviD codec support this feature, so regardless of your player of choice the encode should appear at the proper size. The Japanese audio on the R1 DVD is horribly b0rked. There is no dialog out of front left speaker for about the first half of the movie. Consequently, I've used the R2 Japanese audio, and this problem has been fixed. The source was pretty clean making the filtering process fairly easy. XviD ended up being the video codec of choice because it compressed slightly better than DivX. I really have to thank the typesetters as well. Acou did a nice job and I hope you enjoy his work. B0nk worked on many of the more difficult signs and I think you'll find his work to be amazing. There is one scene a little more than half way into the movie where he has about 10 incredible signs in the period of a couple minutes, and it blew me away. If you like this encode, support the authors and purchase the DVD. Enjoy!

Retiming of the english audio done using cooledit pro as the rest of the renewal project.
Manual timing also done on the R1 subtitles to fit the frames.

Subtitles used was from the R1 DVD as well as the SSA Script Version 1.0 by Melbourne Anime Society,
Based on a script by Studio 00' - Dont really know who those people are, but they deserve the credits.

Since both the subs from the R1 DVD as well as the fansub script was incomplete compared to the renewal source,
there was a lot of retiming as well as insertion of new lines needed.

VERY timeconsuming and frustrating, as this film is a total cutscene & kanji hell at times. (Not to mention completely useless)
Thus editing & retiming the audio & subtracks to THE INFERNAL CUTSCENES THAT LAST 1 FRAME OR SO was... not fun.
Lets just say this film and subediting both are the pinnacles of evil. Gr.

Poor source. Compared to End of Eva it was night & day. Pixie, warpsharp, lanczosresize & spatial smoothing was used.
The "odd" resolution is a result of this source being in evil letterbox format, so cropping galore.

This source suffers at some places a little bit from having to resize,
but generally the overall quality improved so it was to prefer anyway.
Trimming was used on dark scenes to make them at least watchable, but not oversmoothed.
EKG used on some places that almost looked like .rm if left untouched.

Encoding Notes:
  Rather clean and nice source, expect some noise and bit lowish
  resolution, but that's forgivable, as the whole animation has been
  made with a home computer, without any expensive render farms etc. :-P
  The frame rate is not an error, the original animation is 15fps and
  on DVD it was just every frame duplicated to make it 29.97fps, so I
  just dropped every other frame, to save valuable bitrate. ;-)
  The resolution is also bit abnormal, because of the huge black bars
  in the original video. Using this resolution made it possible to crop
  the black bars away and retain from resizing vertically. (thanks Myr!)
  Oh, and before I forget, the 'Director's version' audio is not a
  comment track, it's the same dialogue, but done by Shinkai himself and
  his wife. Because of a flaw in the R1 DVD, I had to obtain that track
  from the original R2 DVD and edit it, so it may be bit lower quality...
  Anyway, enjoy this fine piece of anime, done by Makoto Shinkai. :-)

Overview:

The Earthlings find themselves in an elaborate sword-and-sorcery tale involving the Eye of God, a super-weapon created by an earlier civilization. Balanced against this threat are comic interludes that include Makoto posing in drag as the Princess Fatora and Jinnai making himself ruler of the insectlike Bugrom.

Just what are these Directors cut episodes?

They are extended versions of episodes 21-24.
Each episode has between 2-6 minutes of new scenes added, some quite noticeable, some not.
All in all, they improve the storytelling and flesh out some of the characters more then the original TV episodes.
They also set the stage for End of Evangelion to a greater extent then the originals.

"Which ones should I watch?" Watch these ones. The original 21-24 are quite pointless after these became available.
Since the Eva timeline is as twisted and evil as Anno`s mind, heres the order in how to view the show once and for all:

-Episodes 1-20.
-Director`s cut eps 21-24.
-Episodes 25 & 26.
-End of Evangelion.

What not needed to watch: (As in wont contribute anything to the storyline)

-Death: Was only made to whip up the fanbase before the cinematic release of End of Evangelion.
        It is a 1hr recap of episodes 1-24, with some 5 minutes or so of new footage, most of it also in the Directors cut eps.
        Completely useless.

-Rebirth: This is just the first 30 or so minutes of End of Eva.
          Was attached to Death in order to whip up the fans before the cinematic release of End of Evangelion.
          Completely useless once you get End of Eva. (Was never encoded as it was not remastered in the first place, thank God.)

-Old versions of eps 21-24: Who needs these when the DC eps are available?
                            Was only included in the release because some fanboys surely wouldnt been able to sleep without them.


Same encoding procedure as with the TV eps, except slightly more humane bitrate (yay!) since theyre longer.
People with slow cups might still experience stutter though. And a thing that has been consistant through the whole renewal
project is the annoying "source is perfect film unless things move fast" issue.. some places there was no whole frames at all,
and these directors cut eps was particulary bad, so bad that sometimes frames had to be imported from the tv versions,
sometimes it couldnt be fixed. Retiming of the english audio done using Adobe audition 1.5.

Particulary evil stuff here, as ADV replaced some of the "ok" dub actors in the show with drunk garden gnomes.
This made retiming & listening to the dubtrack a teeth-grinding & hair-loosening affair.
Lets just say the splendid 5.1 original track is soul-saving here.

Subs made mixing some fansubtracks with ADV subs, plus lots of manual typoediting & translation fixing.
Retiming the 1-frame kanji-cutscenes was as usual hellish.

Guess I here at the end can spill that I with porpuse didnt smooth the renewal project as much as I could without killing to much detail,
as you usually can with these new all digital sources. I think Evangelion was one of the very last shows with 100% handdrawn cels,
backgrounds etc. To even smooth the show a tad to much would be herecy.
I decided on a line of noise that unless you watch your anime with your face almost pressed against the monitor should be quite painless.
