The Automail is a complex item composed of over 31 individually sculpted and cast elements. The glove alone is 23 affixed pieces built to fit specific measurements. Joints at the armpit and elbow are made from a much softer latex for comfort and mobility, while the arm and shoulder plates are rigid.
All surfaces are sanded, buffed and layer painted to achieve a smooth, metallic sheen, as well as a true worn-metal appearance. Shadows are hand-painted in acrylic. The painted surface is virtually impervious to moisture and other common wear.
The arm is specifically build to be worn directly on the bare arm for a non-bulky look, but can be worn over clothing. In the above images, spirit gum* has been used to secure the front, back, and side points of the body mount to the skin. When clothing is worn over the arm, side-straps or cross-straps are not necessary to hold the arm in place. (*Spirit gum - rubber cement-like substance used in theatrical settings to apply prosthetic appliances to the skin.)
update: vēl mazliet automail :)
The arm is made out of polyurethane resin then airbrushed to make it that wonderful silver.
