Marimite is based off of a very popular manga that is running currently in the shoujo magazine Margaret. Surprisingly enough, the series has a large following of male fans as well - well, surprising until you realize that most of them are fans of the yuri overtones running through the show! Of course I'm not sure Japan could write a story about an all-girls school WITHOUT said overtones, and I guess it's not particularly a bad thing... ^^
